For POWERS, bringing songs to life means tapping into their own eclectic backgrounds — which span from playing in punk bands in New York City to co-writing for the likes of Kylie Minogue and Icona Pop — and taking a collage-like approach to constructing crystalline pop. Citing the cut-and-paste art of Robert Rauschenberg and Terry Gilliam among their longtime influences, POWERS piece together chopped-up live instrumentation, synths, samples, and beats into a sound that’s intricately composed but graced with timeless pop simplicity. And on their debut EP Legendary (praised by Nylon as “rich with disco-funk pop that revels in its own genre-bending light”), the duo deepen that sound by infusing each track with potent feeling, from effervescent self-assurance on “Hot" to epic lovesickness on “Loved By You.”
Los Angeles based singer-songwriter and actress Bridgit Mendler is set to release her highly anticipated NemesisEP on November 18th. Upon sharing lead single “Atlantis,” the track hit #2 on Spotify’s Viral Chart, #1 on HypeMachine, and garnered over four million streams across platforms. Bridgit also revealed the official “Atlantis” video with VICE’s Noisey who dubbed it “a masterwork in craft and atmosphere.” Bridgit Mendler had already released a platinum single (“Ready or Not”), dropped an album that went Top 30 on the Billboard charts and No. 1 on iTunes (Hello My Name Is...), and twice toured the U.S. Yet when she began working on her first studio recording in four years, she was nervous. “I had been performing and promoting for so long that I hadn’t caught up and figured out who I was. I wasn’t the same as the girl who made my debut album.” She wanted her music to reach a new depth of vulnerability, of transparency—and she knew she had to do this by exploring her personal heartbreak through her love of writing. “Each of my songs,” explains the L.A.-based artist, “would be based on an unfiltered story from my life. This is what I have gone through and this is who I am because of it.”
Nick Leng: 2017 will see Nick releasing more solo material that builds on the success of his most recent EP, Drivers, which was released through B3Sci Records. He also looks to maintain his unique position as an artist that straddles both the indie and electronic worlds with features that are similar to his latest collaboration with dance recording artist, StéLouse on the single, “Been So Long”.
