With single name admirers such as Sting, Oprah, Stevie and Obama, its no surprise when those that surround this timeless artist make the point that his name is spelled in all caps with the period – MAJOR. And for many other performers this could appear as a bit overly confident. Good thing for MAJOR. it’s his real name and he has the chops to back the point.
He burst into the spotlight in 2016 with the Billboard Adult R&B Songs charttopping hit “Why I Love You,” off his debut EP “i am MAJOR..” The beautiful ballad has since become a wedding anthem across the world, most notably from comedian Kevin Hart’s E! News Wedding Special and from Patti LaBelle famously covering the song during her shows. The song has now eclipsed 45 million views on YouTube, peaked at #3 on the Billboard Urban/AC & Streaming chart in over 20 countries and has been featured on hit television shows like “So You Think You Can Dance,” and “The Voice.” Most recently on May 12, 2018, having performed the anthem at the request of Marissa Blair and Marcus Martin’s wedding. Marissa and Marcus are a Virginia couple that were excited about planning their wedding until they found themselves in the midst of a deadly car attack on August 12, 2017 while standing among counter-protesters at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville. “The duo stood among counter protestors when a car, driven by Alex Fields plowed through the crowd. Martin pushed his fiancée out of the way, and was thrown through the air, ultimately breaking his leg. The couple's friend, Heather Heyer, was killed,” as reported by USA Today. The singer began the ceremony by singing his hit song as Ms. Blair walked toward her groom. “This was an honor. LOVE wins every time! They represent the kind of sacrifice my song sings about. It’s proof we millennials know what true love is,” MAJOR. affirms.
“Why I Love You,” was the follow-up to “Honest,” which is a mesmerizing vocal ride that operates at a level that surfs the sky, but also achieves a minimalist beauty that is in stark contrast to the brash cockiness his name suggests. The record, a successful debut in its own right charting at #5 on the Billboard Urban/AC chart and finding massive streaming numbers contributed by over 20 countries, really went viral following a live performance where MAJOR. serenaded Halle Berry prompting the actress to say that his music has “rearranged her life perspective.”
Just a short time later, the singer, now signed to distributor and record label EMPIRE, recently released his debut album, Even More. MAJOR. is collaborating with longtime producer Harmony Samuels (Ariana Grande, J-Lo, Maroon 5) and Sting’s son, Joe Sumner. His next record “Better With You In It,” is featured prominently in the hit OWN television series “Black Love.”
The video premiered on May 25, 2018. But ultimately no one ascends from thin air. To understand the rise of MAJOR. as a singer, writer, performer and yes, even actor (“Get On Up,” and “Legend”), is to explore his journey.
Raised in Houston, TX in a blended-family household of 10 siblings MAJOR. began making music at a young age and performed in various musical venues in his hometown and abroad throughout his childhood. MAJOR. explains, “Music has always been my favorite way to tell a story, from 3yrs old to now. I won’t stop until I reach the whole world!”
He graduated from the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (Beyoncé, Robert Glasper) received intensive classical training from Professor Steve Smith of The Juilliard School and Houston Grand Opera High School Voice Studio. And he ultimately attended the famed Berklee College of Music, serving as the Student Body President. After graduation, the musical savant took the next step in the natural evolution of a true musician, packed his bags and headed west, landing in Los Angeles, CA. It wasn’t long before he built a reputation as a powerful live performer selling out historic venues such as The Troubadour, Hotel Café and even the Barclay’s Arena. PJ Morton of Maroon 5 declaring, “MAJOR. gives balance to today’s music showing us that the art of instrumentation and performance is still very much alive.” After some viral YouTube success as well, he inked a deal with hit UK music producer Harmony Samuels at B.O.E. Music Group and has over the past two years set the industry aflame.
Some of his accolades include Apple Music selecting him as “Hot New Artist,” “Outstanding New Artist,” and “Outstanding New Song” NAACP Image Awards nominations, featured by Billboard Magazine as an “Artist To Watch,” two-time Soul Train Awards performer, 2017 Recording Academy “GRAMMY Showcase Featured Artist,” iHeart Radio “On The VERGE Artist,” and co-writer of hit singles “Over & Over Again,” by Nathan Sykes featuring Ariana Grande.
An often-overused reference “To whom much is given, much is expected,” certainly applies here. MAJOR. is a once a generation musician and artist. Oprah giving him a smile before simply saying, “You are MAJOR.!” You have to believe it to achieve it.
That’s MAJOR., all caps with a period.
