On the night of May 9, 2012, The Dear Hunter took to the stage of the sold-out Somerville Theater near Boston for a special one-time event: a performance of their nine-EP, 36-song collection The Color Spectrum in its entirety. The show featured over three hours of music, with special guests Andy Hull (Manchester Orchestra), The Boston String Party, and more. The night was filmed in pristine high definition, and will be released on DVD - March 12, 2013 as The Color Spectrum Live, presented in digital 5.1 surround sound.
The Color Spectrum consists of nine EPs of four songs apiece, each inspired by a color of the spectrum: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet, with White and Black as bookends. It was written and recorded as The Dear Hunter leader Casey Crescenzo traveled across the U.S., working with several producers and musicians along the way, including Manchester Orchestra, Brendan Brown from The Receiving End of Sirens, Mike Watts (who has worked with As Tall As Lions and he mixed the The Dear Hunter’s album Act III: Life And Death), and Steve Haigler (Brand New, As Tall As Lions, Quicksand).
The Color Spectrum claimed two separate spots on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart upon its debut, with the complete collection reaching an impressive #9, and the 11-song CD version (featuring select music from each EP) debuting at #32. SPIN called it “a sprawling, heady mix, merging some of the challenging piano work of latter day Ben Folds Five with a bit of Muse-y, glam rock melodrama.”
