Hobo Johnson
Hailing from Sacramento, CA, artist Frank Lopes, who cultivated the moniker Hobo Johnson after being kicked out of his parents’ house and left to live in his ’94 Corolla, is propelling his way to the top. The half Azorean Portuguese, quarter Mexican and Native American vocalist built a grassroots following via viral homegrown style videos showcasing his singularity; an amalgamation of spoken word poetry, punk, folk and rap backed by his band The Lovemakers. Hobo’s momentum reached a tipping point after gaining feverish interest through his entry in NPR’s “Tiny Desk” Contest, which went viral(25 million streams to date) despite not winning. Bursting with unadulterated sincerity, his genre-defying sound feels akin to musical anomalies of the past and future. 2017 saw Hobo Johnson’s self-released debut album The Rise of Hobo Johnson, selling out shows everywhere and amassing over 65 million cumulative U.S. streams.
The debut album was called The Rise of Hobo Johnson, and it really lived up to its name. Self-produced, self-recorded, and originally self-released in late 2017, it powered a breakout year that most musicians can only dream of, beginning with the backyard performance of “Peach Scone” that brought Hobo Johnson (née Frank Lopes Jr.) YouTube viewers by the millions, and ending with a huge, intensely devoted fan base eagerly, anticipating his next move. We’ve witnessed The Fall of Hobo Johnson, seen his Revenge, and now his return. Back to his roots as a solo performer and putting forth the honesty and emotions fans have come to expect and love. From busking in the streets of Sacramento to selling out shows all over the world Hobo Johnson returns with brand new music and a brand new tour.

My musical journey began when I started experimenting with beatmaking in college. I loved crafting samples directly from vinyl and I dove deep into the world of music production studying audio engineering under mixing mastermind John McBride—whose distinctive voice appears at the beginning of “Cocaine.” I took a break from music, until my former roommate and fellow musician Clint Michigan encouraged me to pursue my creative streak and so I shared my demos with the guys behind Pizzaslime Records. Their belief in me led to more writing and producing my music with Charlie Brand. I’m excited to finally be able to share the first song with you.
