The Cult, formed in 1984 in England, emerged from the post-punk scene and went on to sell millions of albums, earning numerous international and U.S. gold and platinum certifications. Fronted by Ian Astbury (vocals) and Billy Duffy (guitar), the band has released 11 studio albums over their career. Known as “Shamanic goths,” The Cult gained international fame with their 1985 album Love, featuring the enduring rock anthem “She Sells Sanctuary” and the popular follow-up single “Rain.” Their 1989 album Electric included tracks like “Love Removal Machine,” “Wild Flower,” and “Lil’ Devil,” which critics praised for their swagger and intensity. Most recently, The Cult released Under the Midnight Sun, with one review noting that “rock’s unquenchable melodramatists have the fire in their eyes still.” In late 2023, Astbury and Duffy revived Death Cult for a series of live performances, including a sole U.S. show at The Theatre at The Ace Hotel and a limited run of U.K. dates, highlighted by back-to-back sold-out concerts at Brixton Electric.
